Creator:Shoji Hamada

This piece was made around 1961. From about 1955 Shoji began to use the salt glaze* technique, in which rock salt is thrown into the kiln to produce a film on the surface, and it seems that he had established the technique by the time this piece was produced. *Salt glaze is a technique that the glaze is applied at the end of a firing (about 1,300°C), when it compounds with the silicic acid content of the clay. It is a technique originating in Germany.
