The technique of creating beautiful crystalline patterns in the glaze was discovered and developed by accident during firing at the Royal Kiln, which was established under the influence of Louis XV and Madame de Pompadour. Stable production of this type of glaze is extremely difficult, and the Shinemon kiln overcame this difficulty and commercialized it as a work of art for daily use. The design of the crystals appearing in the white porcelain of Arita-yaki porcelain, sprayed with a mist of blue, is reminiscent of the sea shimmering in the sunlight, creating a jewel-like beauty. When filled with tea or sake, the crystals sparkle and shine so fantastically that it is easy to forget the time and gaze at them.
The shape "Tenmoku" comes from a vessel made in China. During the Kamakura period (1185-1333), Japanese monks who had studied at the temple of Tianmu Mountain in Zhejiang Province, China, brought back to Japan tea bowls called Tenmoku tea bowls, which were highly prized. This type of tea bowls had been produced in China in large numbers and at one time reigned on the throne of Chinese tea bowls, and is characterized by a low, small ring on the bottom, a mortar-shaped body and a neck on the mouth rim. The Tenmoku-shaped tea bowl by Shinemon, which is a smaller version of this bowl, is very popular.
