The name “oil drop” comes from the beautiful patterns that look like drops of oil on the water surface. During firing at high temperatures, the minerals in the glaze recrystallize in the bubbles that form in the black Tenmoku glaze, resulting in the appearance of golden spots. The origin of this type of glaze is the oil-drop Tenmoku, a black bowl fired at the Jian kiln in Shuiji Town in northern Fujian Province during the Song Dynasty in China. The vessel expresses the shining universe and purifies the heart of the viewers. In this work, gold is applied to the edge to create a luxurious effect like the light of the stars, and when you look inside, you can feel a sense of perspective as if you are being lured into a deep abyss.
The shape "Tenmoku" comes from a vessel made in China. During the Kamakura period (1185-1333), Japanese monks who had studied at the temple of Tianmu Mountain in Zhejiang Province, China, brought back to Japan tea bowls called Tenmoku tea bowls, which were highly prized. This type of tea bowls had been produced in China in large numbers and at one time reigned on the throne of Chinese tea bowls, and is characterized by a low, small ring on the bottom, a mortar-shaped body and a neck on the mouth rim. The Tenmoku-shaped tea bowl by Shinemon, which is a smaller version of this bowl, is very popular.
