The deep blue glaze, using cobalt oxide as the pigment, was produced in the 18th century at the Royal Kiln of Sevres, France, which was relocated from Paris to Sevres in response to a proposal to Louis XV by Madame de Pompadour. Known as " Bleu de Roi" (the blue of the king), it was considered a forbidden color at the time and could not be used by anyone except the royal family. The Shinemon kiln has mastered the advanced technique of creating beautiful and mysterious patterns of crystals in the glaze, and has achieved a color that reminds of deep and profound ocean blue as a piece of art for daily use.
The shape "Tenmoku" comes from a vessel made in China. During the Kamakura period (1185-1333), Japanese monks who had studied at the temple of Tianmu Mountain in Zhejiang Province, China, brought back to Japan tea bowls called Tenmoku tea bowls, which were highly prized. This type of tea bowls had been produced in China in large numbers and at one time reigned on the throne of Chinese tea bowls, and is characterized by a low, small ring on the bottom, a mortar-shaped body and a neck on the mouth rim. The Tenmoku-shaped tea bowl by Shinemon, which is a smaller version of this bowl, is very popular.
