Creator:Tomohiro Matsumoto

This cup was created by a mid-career Japanese ceramic artist, Tomohiro Matsumoto. The cup is called Akae ware. Akae ware, which was developed in the 17th century in Japan, is characterized by decorative designs and patterns in red.
This cup was initially coated with white engobe. And then it was coated with clear glazes and was fired at about 1,200 degrees Celsius. Then, its upper part was painted in red with hand-written patterns and was fired again at 750 degrees Celsius. Finally, its bottom part was painted in gold and then fired at 730 degrees Celsius. Matsumoto’s red and gold paint and hand-written patterns are inspired by the 17th century ornamental ceramics of Kyoto where potters decorated pottery in red, yellow, blue, black and gold.
