The copper component in the glaze, when fired in reduction firing (firing with less oxygen), produces a ruby color called “cinnabar”. This vivid and dignified color was called “jewel red” during the Ming Dynasty in China, and was used in court ceremonies. It was once discontinued, but was revived during the Qing Dynasty. The technique of making cinnabar is very difficult because it is prone to cracking, scratches and glaze flow during firing, and only half of the pieces are made into products. The Shinemon kiln overcame these difficulties and produced a unique red color like a precious gem. This piece is decorated by adding lines of iron gosu to the cinnabar glaze.
